TOPIC: chickens not laying

chickens not laying 1 Year, 6 Months ago
I am totally new to all this got 4 wellsummer chickens at Christmas the breeder we got them from said that they had just started moulting so it would be six weeks before they started laying again. It is now getting into the eighth week and no eggs is this normal and can it be put down to the cold weather. The chickens seem very healthy and content feeding well and their droppings are the right size and texture according to the book I have. Can anyone out there give me some advice.
Thanks!

Hi Botbot
It depends on a few things! How old your hens are i.e. are they at point of lay - with my girls they all started laying at completely different times and we just let nature take it's course. If you know they have already been laying then it could simply be down to time of year. Egg production does stop/dwindle in winter because the days are so short (not enough light and the weather is so bad!). The only other thing I can think of if they have laid regularly before is something called 'eggbound'. This means they could have an egg stuck! You'll be able to feel this by gently feeling around your hens vent but the hen will also be straining a lot and not herself. In checking your hens out you need to be careful not to break the egg. My advice if you think your hens are eggbound is to go to a vet. The latest SPS newsletter has a list of vets in it if your own vet doesn't know how to treat chickens.
Good luck!

Thanks for that, the chickens seem fine, no problems in behaviour or feeding on examination they don't seem to be egg bound. I will just have to put it down to the time of year and the fact that it has been so cold. Once the days get longer and it warms up they should start to lay again. I had read on another web site that Wellsummers can be awkward at times when it comes to egg production. Looking forward to that first egg. Thanks:)
